2008 - 2009 Fall Bible Study
The Hidden Hand of God: Wisdom Stories from Ruth, Daniel, and Esther

The fall bible study written by Gwen Sayler and Ann Fritschel, both professors of Hebrew Bible at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. This study will run in the September through May issues ofLWT promotional brochure 2008-2009 Lutheran Woman Today.

Biblical wisdom stories offer fertile material for reflection on what it means to act boldly in complex situations that raise challenging questions about the meaning of faithfulness "under fire."

Written during the Persian and Greek time periods, these books illustrate well wisdom themes central to both the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. All three deal with issues of faithfulness in cultures that are at least somewhat hostile (Daniel and Esther as Jews in a foreign setting and Ruth as a foreigner in a Jewish setting), which raises interesting questions for us as we live out our faith in our own cultural settings.

Issue An Overview
June-July/August 2008 Come to the Waters
This three–session Bible study expands on the theme of the 2008 Women of the ELCA Triennial Gathering in Salt Lake City, Utah, "Come to the Waters." The Rev. Karen Bockelman, assistant to the bishop in the Northeast Minnesota Synod of the ELCA, will guide readers through the rich images and meanings of baptism and how that sacrament shapes our lives and vocations. Come to the Waters is an invitation to "walk wet"— to remember, affirm, and celebrate baptism throughout life. These sessions will look at the waters of baptism through the lenses of Scripture, Lutheran tradition, personal experience, and the call to act boldly in and for justice.

Session 1: Water, Water Everywhere
Session 2: It's a Matter of Death and Life
Session 3: Living Water Walking Wet
